India Overtakes China To Become Member Of UN’s ECOSOC Body

Washington: The permanent representative of India to the United Nations TS Tirumurti tweeted on Monday that India has secured its position as a member of the United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Tirumurti tweeted, “India wins seat in prestigious ECOSOC body! India elected member of Commission on Status of Women (CSW). It’s a ringing endorsement of our commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all our endeavours. We thank member states for their support.”

The election was contested to the Commission on Status of Women by India, Afghanistan and China. China failed to even cross the half-way mark whereas India and Afganistan won ballot among 54 members.

India secured its place as a member of the United Nation’s Commission on Status of Women for four years, from 2021 to 2025.
