Dubai: Ricky Ponting, the coach of Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) is a result-driven person and always liked impactful player. He seems more hopeful for youths of the team like Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Prithvi Shaw while the management decided to bring in two veteran players; Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Delhi Capitals is known to invest heavily on youth which in turn gave them results, making the team stand in top three last year. Ashwin will be adding depth to the spin-bowling department along with Amit Mishra and Axar Patel on the UAE pitch, Rahane seems awkwardly misfit in the few team meetings.
Rishabh Pant, who had previously led Capital’s charge in past two seasons, is hungry for a break to set his career with the men in blue while Rahane also has eyes to comeback in India’s white-ball scheme. Rahane’s position in the top order could be impactful for Pant to lose out.
Placing Rahane in the batting line-up is going to be tricky this year as Shikhar Dhawan is a preferred opener besides Shaw, Iyer comes at no. 3 and Pant at no. 4. This line-up seems to have worked well for the team last year.
Ricky Ponting, who has previously backed Glenn Maxwell, would like Shriman Hetmyer in the spin department to get a longer hit in the middle.
