Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has blamed the Bollywood industry for the rise in rape cases.
Khan said, “World history tells that when you increase vulgarity in society, two things happen: sex crimes increase and the family system breaks down,” Imran said during a TV interview.
“New Delhi too has become the ‘rape capital’ of the world due to obscenity in Bollywood. Compare the movies made in India 40 years ago to the movies being made now. Look at the impact of those movies,” was quoted as saying by Odisha Bytes.
The prime minister reacted to the widespread protests in Pakistan after a woman was gang-raped in front of her two children last week.
The incident happened when the victim’s car ran out of fuel at midnight on the Lahore-Sialkot highway on September 9. Then she was waiting for the assistance from the highway police meanwhile, she was attacked by two men and took her children to a field beside the highway where she was gang-raped.
Khan said that the “highway gang-rape had shaken the entire nation because the victim could have been anyone’s sister or daughter”, according to a report in Dawn newspaper.
“They (rapists) should be given exemplary punishments. In my opinion, they should be hanged at the chowk (piazza),” he was quoted as saying by Dawn. He also added that such punishments should be reserved for rapists and child abusers.
“Unfortunately, when we had the discussion, [we were] told it [public hanging] would not be internationally acceptable… They said the GSP-Plus trade status given to us by the European Union will be affected,” the Prime Minister said.
He suggested another punishment, that was to “chemically or surgically castrate” rapists, according to the severity of the crime.
Presently, the Punjab police of Pakistan announced that the accused Abid Ali and his accomplice Shafqat Ali have been arrested and confessed their crime for raping the woman. The police also said that the DNA of Shafqat Ali have matched the samples which were found from the crime scene.
