‘You Didn’t Count, So Nobody Died?’: Rahul Gandhi Attacks BJP Government

New Delhi: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, attacked the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on Tuesday for claiming on Monday, during the Parliamentary monsoon session, that they are unaware of how many migrant workers had died while returning to their places during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Modi government does not know how many migrant workers died or how many people lost their jobs during the lockdown”.

He also added, “You didn’t count so what, nobody died? Yes, but it is unfortunate that there was no impact on the Modi government remained clueless”.

Minister of State (MoS) for labour and employment Santosh Kumar Gangwar had claimed on Monday that the Government has no record of deaths of migrant workers during this pandemic. Replying to the question in the Lok Sabha, the minister said, “No such data was maintained”.

Gangwar also failed to answer on the loss of employment, claimed that the Modi government has no assessment of job losses of migrant labourers due to coronavirus outbreak.

When asked in the session “whether the government has provided any compensation/economic assistance to victims’ families,” the government replied, “the question does not arise” as there is no data of it in the first place.

However, there was a state-wise data presented by the minister saying, “More than 63,07,000 migrants shifted to various destinations during the Covid-19 pandemic. While 4611 Shramik Special Trains were run to ferry the migrant returnees”.

More than 122 million people are estimated to have lost their jobs because of COVID-19 outbreak in the country accounting 75% of them to be small traders and daily-wage labourers.
