Chennai: The Madras High Court lashed out at the Election Commission on Monday and said “it is the most irresponsible institution in the country” who have done nothing to prevent political parties from breaking all COVID-19 protocol.

At the time of hearing a plea moved by Tamil Nadu Transport Minister MR Vijayabhaskhar, the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said: “You (EC) are the only institution responsible for the situation we are in today and You have been singularly lacking any kind of exercise of authority. You have not taken measures against political parties holding rallies despite the court saying ‘Maintain Covid protocol, maintain Covid protocol’.”

“We assure you that we will stop counting if we do not find before May 2 a blueprint on how proper maintenance of Covid protocol is assured so that this state does not succumb to the idiosyncrasies any further,” the court also observed.

Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee told the Election Commission’s counsel, “Your institution is singularly responsible for the second wave of COVID-19. The Chief Justice went to the extent of orally saying, “Your officers should be booked on murder charges probably,” LiveLaw reported.

According to the Chief Justice, public health is of utmost importance and it is unfortunate to remind the constitutional authorities about the count and the possibility of further increase in number of Corona affected after May 2.
