Mumbai: Actor-politician Rajnikant is all set to be conferred with the 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Thursday.
Javedkar said, “Happy to announce Dadasaheb Phalke award for 2019 to one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema Rajnikant Ji. His contribution as actor, producer, and screenwriter has been iconic”.
The megastar will be the 12th south Indian actor to be honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Apart from being an actor, he announced his interest in politics and will soon be seen contesting in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election.
Congratulating Rajnikant, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Popular across generations, a body of work few can boast of, diverse roles and an endearing personality…that’s Shri @rajnikanth Ji for you. It is a matter of immense joy that Thalaiva has been conferred with Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Congratulations to him.” Many other celebrities across the film industry have congratulated him for his greatest achievement.
The 70-year-old actor has also bagged Padma Bhushan Award, Padma Vibhushan Award by the Government of India, Raj Kapoor Award, Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award and etc.
Expressing his gratitude and honour, he said, “I wholeheartedly thank the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conferring me Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in the Indian Film Industry. I thank all my friends and family who sacrificed a lot while we were struggling in poverty to make me an actor, my guru K Balachander for creating ‘the Rajnikant’.
