Kolkata: A puja committee from Shamserganj police station in West Bengal’s Murshidabad came forward to ensure no one sleeps hungry amid Covid-19 pandemic.

Rice, pulses, curry and a sweet dish are being given to the people to feed full stomach for just one Rupee. There is no condition other than obeying the coronavirus guidelines. Everyone who collects coupon in the morning from the Pujo Committee is entitled to get the food on the very same day, according to a report in the highest-circulated Bengali daily Anandabazar Patrika.

The state and central governments have imposed multiple controls on public life to handle the Covid situation.

The market is partially open. The trains have stopped. Many people have lost livelihood and the plight is still on. Workers in neighbouring State have returned or are returning home due to loss of job. Many of them came here to earn their livelihood, but it has become almost impossible to survive.

Since Friday, the Thana Para Puja Committee of Shamserganj stood by the starving people. Morning 8 o’clock is the timing to collect coupons for one person while from 10 am to 10 pm they can collect the food by producing those coupons. On the first day, the organisation fed around hundred people.

Pujo committee member Ramakrishna Singh said, “Vegetarian food is also available. There will be chutney and rasgolla. The curry will be the same one day. ” In his words, “We are not seeing any criteria to get food. Our only intention that everyone should get food. Money is being collected intentionally so that no one thinks of himself as humiliation. Let them think that they are buying with money.”

Asked how they meet the cost? Ramakrishna replied, “We have a trust of the Pujo Committee. Food is being provided from the trust money. We are also contributing as needed.”

The Pujo Committee also said that as many people as come, food will be given to all. But everyone has to wear a mask. Adequate sanitizer is available in the food area.

Nowshad Sheikh, a local resident, said, “I used to work as a hawker. But now I am jobless. I was very worried. At least people like me can have a meal here!”

This is one of the incidents that The Lateralz is highlighting, there may be plenty of such programmes for social cause are being held. The organisation salutes all of them.
