Kolkata: BJP’s first import from Trinamool Congress in its effort to break the backbone of the Mamata Banerjee-led, Mukul Roy returned to the TMC fold on Friday.
“Ghorer chhele ghore phirlo (Mukul has returned home),” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She stressed that Roy was never a traitor like the others.
“Yes, more will come,” Mamata confirmed to the reporters. “As you know, old is always gold,” she joked.
“I feel great at seeing my old colleagues, after leaving the BJP. I can’t be in the BJP,” Roy said going on to describe the Chief Minister as “the only leader of Bengal and India”.
“I never had any differences with Mamata Banerjee,” Mukul Roy said when asked an uncomfortable question of his repeated attacks on “Didi” in the past few years. Mamata quickly came to his rescue and said, “Don’t try to create differences.”
But the chief minister didn’t seem interested when asked about the return of Suvendu Adhikari. “Only those who are sober and those who don’t encourage bitterness are welcome back,” she said.
According to sources, Roy was the prime target of Mamata’s Operation “Return of the Prodigal,” as it were.
It may be recalled that Mamata had in a public ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections said, “Mukul Roy is not a bad as Suvendu Adhikari.”
