Kolkata: West Bengal Police’s Special Task Force (STF) gunned down two notorious gangsters from Punjab who were hiding in a rented apartment at a multi-storeyed residential building in the New Town area here on Wednesday.
The criminals opened fire to injure a police officer. According to the cops, the duo was wanted for multiple criminal activities in several states like Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.
Reports say, Jaipal Singh Bhullar, one of the slain criminals, was involved in the murder of police personnel in Ludhiana a few months ago. The other one was identified as Jaspreet Jassi. Both were allegedly involved in firearms and explosives smuggling.
Police sources further said that a large cache of armed ammunition was recovered from them.
As per police, STF got information about the gangsters from two men who were nabbed three days ago in Birbhum while trying to smuggle in explosives and pistols from Bihar.
“Interrogating the duo, we came to know about these two gangsters who were hiding in Kolkata for some days. Further investigation revealed that the duo was hiding in a rented apartment in the Shapoorji complex in New Town,” an STF officer was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.
An STF team raided flat number B 153, an LIG apartment where they were hiding since May 22 at around at 3.30 pm on Wednesday.
All of a sudden, they started firing from inside and as a result the cops had to open fire to retaliate.
“We wanted them to surrender but they started firing, so we had to fire back. As a result, both of them died. One of our personnel, Kartick Ghosh, was injured in the firing. He has suffered a bullet injury on his left shoulder and has been admitted to a private hospital,” said one of the officers.
