Kanpur: Four days after the violence erupted here, a BJP leader was arrested on Tuesday for derogatory comments on Prophet Muhammad. BJP Youth Wing office bearer, Harshit Srivastava, was trying to spoil the atmosphere through his objectionable posts, said the police.
“We will act against anyone who tries to play with religious sentiments,” Kanpur Police Commissioner Vijay Meena was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Kanpur saw violence break out in parts of the city after Friday prayers as the two groups clashed with each other and threw stones over a call to shut down markets. The market shut down was called in protest against BJP leader Nupur Sharma’s comments against Prophet Muhammad at a television debate on the Gyanvapi mosque matter.
It may be recalled that the BJP had suspended Sharma and expelled Naveen Jindal, the party’s Delhi unit media head, for their remarks on the Prophet on Sunday.
The derogatory remarks had earned massive backlash from across the world with as many as 16 countries condemning the controversial remarks.
More than 50 people, which included key accused Zafar Hayat, have been arrested and a case has been registered against more than 1,500 named and unnamed people. The violence left over 40 injured.
