New Delhi: More than 1,16,000 newborns in India died in just a month due to air pollution in 2019, according to the State of Global Air 2020 report published on Wednesday.

This was the highest among the 116 countries that were surveyed.

The report released by the Health Effects Institute said long-term exposure to outdoor and household air pollution – which led to strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, lung cancers, chronic lung diseases and neonatal diseases – contributed to a total of 16,67,000 deaths in India in 2019.

The report analysed the impact of air pollution on infants’ health and survival in their first month, and found that there was growing evidence to link mothers’ exposure to air pollution during pregnancy with an increased risk of their infants being born underweight or pre-mature, which lead to neonatal deaths.

The new analysis estimated what percentage of those deaths came from ambient and household air pollution.

“An infant’s health is critical to the future of every society, and this newest evidence suggests an especially high risk for infants born in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa,” said Dan Greenbaum, President of HEI.

“Although there has been slow and steady reduction in household reliance on poor-quality fuels, the air pollution from these fuels continues to be a key factor in the deaths of these youngest infants,” he added.

Altogether, the report found that air pollution led to 6.7 million deaths worldwide in 2019, making it the fourth leading cause of death behind high blood pressure, tobacco use, and dietary risks.
