Mohali: Ravichandran Ashwin surpassed Kapil Dev and Ravindra Jadeja stood tall with his all-round brilliance to give India a 222-run victory against Sri Lanka in the first Test at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday.
The Lankans team looked anything but Test class in a five-dayer that concluded inside three days. After being skittled out for 174 in the first innings, Sri Lanka, who lost 16 wickets on Day 3, were dismissed for 178 in their second innings. India scored a mammoth 574 for 8 declared.
India now lead the two-Test series 1-0 and will like to gain full 24 points from the rubber by notching up victory in the Pink Ball Test beginning in Bengaluru on March 12.
Ashwin (4/47 in 21 overs) replaced Kapil Dev (434 in 131 games) as India’s second-highest wicket-taker with 436 victims. He is now only behind another former India captain Anil Kumble with 619 scalps.
