Aus Vs Ind: Virat Kohli Shines But Hosts On Top After Day One

Adelaide: Virat Kohli starred with a valiant 74 but Australia clawed their way towards the end as India ended the first day of the pink-ball Test match against Australia on 233/6.

Batting first, India were off to a the worst possible start with Prithvi Shaw falling in the very first over to Mitchell Starc. The visitors’ pursuit of rebuilding their innings took a hit with Mayank Agarwal departing for just 17 runs. But skipper Virat Kohli, who had won the toss and opted to bat, took the fight to the Australians with a 68-run stand with Cheteshwar Pujara. Although the latter departed for 43 runs, Kohli held things tight at the other end with a strong 88-run stand with deputy Ajinkya Rahane that gave India the control. But an unfortunate miscommunication between Rahane saw the skipper fall short of his crease and depart for a well-made 74. That dismissal opened the floodgates as Rahane (42) and Hanuma Vihari (16) fell in quick succession.

Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha (9*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (14*) remained unbeaten at the crease for India at the end of the first day’s play.

For the hosts, Mitchell Starc was the most successful bowler with two wickets while Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazelwood–all of them ended with one scalp each.

Brief scores: India 233/6 (Kohli 74, Pujara 43; Starc 2/49) vs Australia.
