Melbourne: Ashleigh Barty became the first Australian to lift her home Grand Slam after 44 years on Saturday.
En route, she halted the fearless American Danielle Collins in straight sets. The world’s numero uno player was 5-1 down in the second set but rallied to win on a tiebreak and got the better of the 27th seed 6-3, 7-6 (7/2) to lift the Australian Open in front of a roaring Rod Laver Arena crowd.
Twenty-five-year-old won her third Slam title after her breakthrough at French Open in 2019 and Wimbledon last year. She joined Serena Williams as the only active players to win majors on all three surfaces.
