Molenbleek: A municipal primary school teacher in Molenbleek, Brussels was suspended after he allegedly showed a naked cartoon of Prophet Mohammed to one of his class.
The municipality immediately suspended the teacher for showing explicit pictures to young kids. It is said that some of them were as young as 10 years.
According to Brussels Times, the teacher was taking a class on a civic spirit to the students of sixth-grade and passed around a tablet, reportedly asking the pupils who took offence to the picture to look away from it.
The drawing was done by Charlie Hebdo cartoonist Coco that depicted the Prophet on his knees and naked, with a yellow star on his buttocks and it was written ‘a star is born’ above the cartoon.
The parents of the children asked the school management about what happened in the class based on what their kids told them.
The Mayor of Molenbleek, Catherine Moureaux had underlined that the decision was taken “for having shown obscenities to young pupils, some of whom are barely 10-years-old and not for having shown a caricature of Mohammed”.
The suspension if the teacher caught the attention of Georges-Louis Bouchez who is the president of the francophone liberal party MR.
He took his Twitter account and wrote, “I hope this information is not accurate. If it is true, it would simply be unacceptable and intolerable. Freedom of expression is non-negotiable.”
Moureaux then replied to his tweet and said that under no circumstances should anyone show 10-year-olds anyone’s genitals. He assured that it was the only reason further proceedings began against the alleged teacher.
