Kolkata: Bengali film actor Srabanti Chatterjee quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday.

Srabanti had joined the saffron brigade in the run up to the West Bengal Assembly polls earlier this year. She had unsuccessfully contested against TMC heavyweight Partha Chatterjee.

The 34-year-old actor cited the BJP’s ‘lack of initiative and sincerity to further the cause of West Bengal’ as her reason for quitting the party.

“Severing all ties with the BJP, the party for which I fought the last state elections. Reason being their lack of initiative and sincerity to further the cause of Bengal,” Chatterjee tweeted.

However, the West Bengal party unit said it would not have bearing on the party saying “it would hardly impact the party”.

“I really don’t know whether she was with the party after the elections. It won’t have an impact on the party,” said BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar said.
