Kolkata: Finally, the BJP finds a candidate to challenge West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur Assembly bypolls and it’s none other than firbrand leader Priyanka Tibrewal. Voting would be held on September 30. Banerjee is slated to file her nominations today.
Tibrewal, a lawyer by profession, is known in the political circuit as a no-nonsense politician had earlier dropped enough hints that she would not shy away from taking on the CM of given an opportunity. Tibrewal is also one of the petitioners in the post-poll violence case in the Calcutta High Court.
The saffron party has chosen Milan Ghosh for Samserganj and Sujit Das for Jangipur constituencies.
Taking a dig at her electoral rival, Tibrewal took a leaf out of Banerjee’s pre-poll mantra, ‘Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaaye’ saying, “Bhabanipur nijer meyekei chaay. I was born in Bhabanipur, Mamata was not born in Bhabanipur,” she told ANI.
Meanwhile, the Bhabanipur contest will be triangular among TMC, BJP and the Left. The Congress has refuse to take on Banerjee on her home turf.
Slamming Banerjee further, Tibrewal added, “The candidate opposite me (Mamata Banerjee) has lost an election, that’s why a by-election is being held in Bhabanipur. They (TMC) had already won Bhabanipur but they don’t care for democracy or for what people say.”
