Guwahati: Effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh were burnt and slogans were shouted by BJP supporters as protests erupted on Sunday. This happened after the party named candidates for next month’s Manipur Assembly elections.
Supporters ransacked party offices in different parts of the state. They gathered in many areas with placards forcing the state to beef up security around the BJP headquarters in Imphal.
Sources said that most of the disgruntled leaders were those who were not selected to accommodate defectors from the rival Congress.
As many as 10 former Congress leaders who switched allegiance were given tickets as the BJP declared it would contest all 60 seats in the Manipur assembly elections, and released a list of candidates.
