Buoyant India Should Not Slip: Take Them On Virat Kohli & Boys!

Kolkata: Being high on confidence has its pros and cons. Buoyed by success, the gain in agility takes you places. But the flip side can boomerang. Over-optimism can scuttle your chances.

As a charged-up Team India take on England today at Leeds, you wouldn’t be slammed for being watchful. On one hand, here is a team that is going into the third Test of the five-match series on the back of a resounding victory at Lord’s. The guys under a super-energetic captain Virat Kohli are raring to take an unassailable lead in the series.

There’s no repudiating that Kohli’s boys are high on energy after the win at Lord’s but as discussed earlier, one dreads the triumphant moments do not lead to complacency.

Knowing Kohli, he would hate to lose the momentum – as he said after the Lord’s Test that it’s about five Test matches and not one. The victory puts that spring in your feet but it’s left to you to use it to the optimum.

Looking back, there are instances galore where a team despite starting with a bang, lost the rhythm midway ending up on a disappointing note. Self-conviction crumbles and the results are disastrous.

This is exactly where the Indian boys need to watch out! Lord’s is past – it’s time to conquer Leeds and this can only be possible if they start from scratch. Team India is blessed that they are led by a man who is never content. The Indian skipper would walk that extra mile to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat even if it means playing the toughest of mind games.

Kohli being Kohli, would not be oblivious to the fact that Joe Root’s men may be down but not out. Lambasted and haunted by critics both at home and beyond, they would come back hard at the Indians. A rap on the knuckles would fire them up – they can ill afford the ignominy of losing on home soil. If India can recharge batteries after the loss to New Zealand at the World Test Championship final, the Roots too can hit back.

Team India shouldn’t fall into the trap of underestimating their opponents. The general perception doing the rounds that England have only two match-winners in their ranks is deceptive and suicidal to buy. Cricket is a game of uncertainties and can produce champions out of all odds. Point taken?

The last Test India played at Leeds in 2002 was a one-sided affair for the visitors. Take a leaf out of its pages but Kohlis, please do not get carried away. Indian cricket is celebrating 50 years of its maiden Test series win in England. History beckons to be rewritten – we haven’t tasted a Test series victory under English conditions since 2007. Kohli and his boys have a golden opportunity to enter the record books.

So go and fire boys! Don’t take it easy!
