Kolkata: Calcutta High Court’s division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice R Bharadwaj refused to accept the BJP’s request of stay for the upcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for Sunday, December 19.
The court even directed the State Election Commission and the West Bengal government to adopt measures for conducting polls in other civic bodies at the earliest with a minimum number of phases.
The State Election Commission along with the Trinamool Congress government had earlier told the high court that elections to 111 municipal bodies will be held in 6-8 phases by May 2022. However, both parties said the dates would be finalised later, in view of the Covid-19 situation and board examinations for the students.
