Chandigarh: Punjab’s first Dalit CM Charanjit Singh Channi took oath at the Raj Bhawan here today. Channi in a dramatic move was chosen as the man to succeed Amarinder Singh who was forced to resign by the Congress High Command on Saturday. Channi is the 16th CM of the state.

Addressing a press meet after taking oath as the CM, Channi appreciated the good work done by his predecessor.

“Captain Amarinder Singh did a lot of good work for the people of Punjab. We will take forward his work and waive water and electricity bills of farmers,” he said as quoted by ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his congratulations and wishes to Channi and assured to work together for the development of the state.

The ceremony was attended by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu, Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat among others. However, Channi’s successor Singh was conspicuous by his absence. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa whom Channi pipped to the CM’s post and OP Soni were sworn in Deputy CMs.

Channi got the last-minute nod because of his Dalit identity and also proximity to Sidhu. As per sources, Channi will have two Deputy CMs.

But it remains to be seen whether, Channi’s appointment is a stop-gap arrangement or not as he is unlikely to be the CM face going into the Assembly elections February next year. Sidhu harbours CM aspirations and it could be a matter of time before he is declared the Congress chief ministerial candidate. But you never know since political leaders are adept at throwing surprises at the last moment.
