New Delhi: Sixteen-year-old chess Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa shocked entire world No 1 Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the eighth round of the Airthings Masters rapid online chess tournament on Monday
Following a disastrous Day One which witnessed three successive losses, 16-year-old chess Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa turned the tables around.
The fifth-youngest player ever to achieve the title of Grandmaster, Praggnanandhaa, stunned the 31-year-old Carlsen with black pieces in 39 moves in a Tarrasch variation game. He thus halted Carlsen’s juggernaut of three consecutive victories.
The Indian had won the World Youth Chess Championships U-8 title in 2013 earning him the FIDE Master title at the age of 7. Praggnanandhaa is currently on eight points and is in joint 12th place after eight rounds with two wins, two draws and four losses.
