Collosal Loss To The World Of Cinema, Bengal’s Cultural Life: PM Modi On Soumitra Chatterjee’s Demise

Kolkata: Legendary icon Soumitra Chatterjee breathed his last at Belle Vue Clinic on Sunday afternoon.

Chatterjee was shifted to a non-Covid Intensive Trauma Unit (ITU) after he tested negative.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to his official Twitter handle and condoled the demise of Chatterjee.

Modi wrote, “श्री सौमित्र चटर्जी का निधन विश्व सिनेमा के साथ-साथ पश्चिम बंगाल और पूरे देश के सांस्कृतिक जीवन के लिए बहुत बड़ी क्षति है। उनके निधन से अत्यंत दुख हुआ है। परिजनों और प्रशंसकों के लिए मेरी संवेदनाएं। ओम शांति!”

President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the demise of the veteran actor and tweeted “With the passing of Soumitra Chatterjee, Indian cinema has lost one of its legends. He will be specially remembered for the ‘Apu’ trilogy and other memorable performances in Satyajit Ray’s masterpieces. He made immense contribution to the craft of acting.”

He shared another tweet and said, “Soumitra Chatterjee’s performances won him several  national and international awards including Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan and Légion d’Honneur. Condolences to his family, the film fraternity and millions of fans across the world.”

Union Minister Amit Shah tweeted, “Deeply pained to learn about the demise of legendary Soumitra Chatterjee ji. An iconic actor, who took Bengali cinema to new heights. In Soumitra Da, Indian silver screen has lost a gem. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and countless followers. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti”

 

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “It’s sad to hear of the demise of Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Shri Soumitra Chatterjee, an actor par excellence who the nation has revered over the years.

My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fans.”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also shared a series of tweets via her official Twitter handle.

“Feluda is no more. ‘Apu’ said goodbye. Farewell, Soumitra (Da) Chatterjee. He has been a legend in his lifetime. International, Indian and Bengali cinema has lost a giant. We will miss him dearly. The film world in Bengal has been orphaned,” her tweet read.

“Best known for his films with Satyajit Ray, Soumitra Da was conferred with Legion of Honor, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Banga Bibhushan, Padma Bhushan and several National Awards. A great loss. Saddened. Condolences to his family, the film fraternity and his admirers across the world,” she wrote in another tweet.

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik tweeted, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of veteran film actor and Dadasaheb Phalke & Padma Bhushan awardee #SoumitraChatterjee. Immortalized in his on-screen portrayal of #Feluda & timeless collaborations with the legendary #SatyajitRay, he leaves behind a great legacy.”

Chatterjee was taken to Kolkata’s Belle Vue Clinic hospital on October 6, a day after he tested positive for the coronavirus.
