New York: The United States on Monday, has crossed the six million-mark of COVID-19 cases with over 183,000 deaths and affected many young adults with long-term problems.
Dr Ashish Jha, the director of the Harvard Global Health Institute said that there is still some good news. “As a nation, we are clearly doing better now on the last day of August than we were on the first day of August.”
“(Daily) cases have come down. Deaths are starting to decline. Hospitalizations are down. This is good news, and it’s largely because of smart policies in Texas and Arizona and Florida around masking and closing bars,” Jha said.
“But there are still parts of the country where things are both bad and even getting worse. In the Dakotas, in Kansas and other states, we still see a lot of cases. And as a nation, we’re still seeing a lot of cases of coronavirus. So progress, but we have a long way to go,” Jha further added.
Due to this pandemic, many Americans are exhausted and have started to pull off their masks and precautions especially when they are spending time with their family and friends.
Dr Deborah Birx, White House coronavirus task force coordinator said that it’s the exact opposite of what needs to be done right now.
“We know we can’t always be perfect. We know that we’ll put this message out about private gatherings and something will happen and you’ll realize you have been in a situation, you’ve been around people, you didn’t have your mask on,” Birx said.
Brix also urged American citizens to be responsible if they want to keep the economies open. “Right now, we gain freedom through wearing our masks and socially distancing,” Brix said, as quoted by CNN.
Also, the health officials have said that currently two vaccines are under the Phase 3 trials and it does not seem possible to be available for the public until early 2021.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) could account the authorisation of the COVID-19 vaccines before the completion of Phase 3 trials.
It is also speculated that 40% of Americans would not be able to get the vaccines even it will be available for free and easy to access, according to a poll conducted by CNN.
To increase the trust within the public, several eminent physicians and experts have called for the formation of an independent commission which will be separate from the FDA for reviewing the data from the vaccine trials.
Dr Kathryn Stephenson, director of the clinical trials unit at the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said, “I’m hearing this from my peers, from doctors and nurses. They’re not anti-vaxxers. They’re pro-vaccine. They vaccinated their own children. But they are skeptical about this vaccine.”
Paul Mango, deputy chief of staff for policy at the US Department of Health Human Services, said that the process for any ultimate approval for a COVID-19 vaccine will be same for any other vaccines.
He said that there is an independent body called Monitoring Board which is assigned to look after each clinical trials.
“We have no insight into the data until the DSMB says we can look at it. They can come back and say, ‘This is not a good vaccine.’ They could come back before we even have 30,000 folks enrolled and say ‘We have enough. This looks great.'”
