New Delhi: India’s COVID-19 tally reached another new high on Thursday, with over 83,000 fresh cases of the infection for the second consecutive day, taking its total tally to 3.85 million.
India, now, is only 1,00,000 cases behind Brazil, the second-worst affected country in the world. Experts are even predicting that the south Asian country will soon overtake Bazil (4.1 million cases) and then the United States (6.1 million cases) to hold the title of having the highest number of cases globally.
A virologist and CEO of the Wellcome Trust Shahid Jameel said the situation in India is not indicating a good signal, adding, “Of the three top countries only India is showing a rising curve. This is a matter of grave concern and there is an urgent need to reverse the trend.”
“People are not using the only scientifically proven methods to limit transmission: wearing masks properly in public and maintaining safe distancing,” he said.
The nation’s COVID-19 death toll has so far claimed 68,501 lives with 1,088 fatalities registered on Thursday.
However, overall recoveries from the infection surpassed the 30 lakh-mark with 30,28,172 people having been declared cured till Thursday night.
Around 10 states/UTs recorded their highest spike in infections in the last 24 hours, including Maharashtra with 18,105 cases, the highest of all. The other states were Odisha (3,631), Haryana (1,881), Madhya Pradesh (1,672), Rajasthan (1,553), Gujarat (1,325), Jammu and Kashmir (1,079), Uttarakhand (946), Goa (713) and Tripura (590).
Cases are rising in Delhi as well. The national capital recorded 2,737 fresh cases, its highest single-day spike in 66 days.
