Pune: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today inaugurated a stadium named after Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra (also Army personnel) at the Army Sports Institute in Pune. Also present on the occasion were Army Chief General MM Naravane and Chopra himself.
Speaking on the occasion Singh emphasised the government’s endeavour to promote a sporting culture in the country. “We are fully committed to promoting sports. Our PM is working to encourage sports and sportspersons. Centre is making all efforts to encourage players. State governments are also playing a crucial role in this process,” Singh was quoted by ANI.
Chopra scripted history when he won the coveted medal in javelin becoming only the second Indian after shooter Abhinav Bindra to bag an individual Olympics gold.
Back in the country, Chopra is the current toast of the nation with rewards and felicitations showered upon him. But the Pride of the Nation has recently decided to take a break from the game this year due to lack of training and poor health. He has promised to come back with greater fervour next year.
