Dinesh Karthik pips Rishabh Pant to make World Cup squad

Wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik, who is currently captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing Indian Premier League, has been preferred over the young Rishabh Pant as India named it’s squad for the World Cup starting on May 30.

The veteran Tamil Nadu cricketer has been chosen as the second choice wicketkeeper–the first choice being former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Another notable absentee was Ambati Rayudu, who many thought to be a certainty for the number four position in the Indian batting order.

The experience of Karthik behind the stumps thus came to his help when it mattered the most, said chief selector MSK Prasad.

“We debated at length whether to pick Pant or DK (Dinesh Karthik). We felt that either of them would only come into the XI if Mahi (Dhoni) is injured. We felt that if it is a big game like semifinal or final, keeping ability also matters. Pant was almost there,” said Prasad after the meeting on Monday.

“We also discussed in a crunch match who is best suited to handle pressure. Under pressure we have seen DK finishing games,” he added.

On Rayudu missing out, he said, “After the 2017 Champions Trophy, we tried a lot of middle-order batsmen which included the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey. Vijay offered us three dimensions — he might bowl a bit and is fantastic fielder. He is a batman who might bowl a bit. We are looking at him for the No. 4 position.

Young all-rounder Vijay Shankar was also called up to the squad for the showpiece event to be held in England and Wales along with the likes of Ravindra Jadeja.

“Nothing went against Rayudu but lot of things went in favour of Shankar,” he added.
Virat Kohli would lead the side with opener Rohit Sharma being his deputy.

The BCCI also said that Navdeep Saini, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed would travel to England for helping the team during the practice sessions.

Squad: Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami.
