Kolkata: Whole night Durga Puja pandal-hopping is expected to start from Monday amidst warning by doctors to the West Bengal government that the number of Covid-19 cases could multiply by four times after the festival.

“Revellers can visit puja pandals in the evening from Tritiya to Ekadashi”, CM Mamata Banerjee told while requesting pandal-hoppers and puja organisers to avoid gathering.

Most of the big pujas in Kolkata were inaugurated by CM herself.

West Bengal doctors warned a spike in the Covid-19 cases since when people started shopping and crowding around market.

On Sunday; Dwitia, 3,983 new Covid-19 cases were reported from WB; 813 in Kolkata itself, the maximum number cases recorded on a single day.

Social media has been flooded with pictures and videos of pandal hopping in Kolkata and suburbs.

Around 37,000 pujas are being performed across Bengal, including more than 2,500 in Kolkata.

The state government has been asked by the Calcutta high court (HC) to submit a plan on Monday about how authorities have planned to avoid gathering during Durga puja.

Government assured the court that the police have been working on strategies to control overcrowding at pandals and public places.

“Face masks have been made mandatory and pandal hoppers are being given hand sanitisers. Volunteers are ensuring that social distancing is being complied with at puja pandals”, said general secretary, Saswata Basu of Forum for Durgotsab.
