Kolkata: The East Bengal football club on Wednesday announced that Shree Cements Limited will be the new sponsor for the club for Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21.
The announcement was made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during a press conference along with the officials of Shree Cements and East Bengal.
“This will show a new path to others. It is really commendable of Shree Cements to come up and invest in football in such times. Hopefully, there won’t be any more difficulties for East Bengal in the future. We want Bengal to be best in everything. Bengal should always show the way. Really happy that East Bengal’s problems are over and they can take part in the ISL,” Mamata Banerjee was quoted as saying by ESPN.
The football club will make an official announcement on Friday which will confirm its entry to the seventh season of Indian Super League (ISL).
The alliance between East Bengal and it’s previous investor Quests Corp didn’t end on a good note. They had several issues and conflicts between themselves. They had clashes from the recruitment of foreign players to the settlement of players dues.
It is believed that Shree Cement which is owned by Benu Gopal Bangur, a Kolkata based company will be more culturally connected to the spirit of the club. So, the club will not face any kind of serious conflicts between themselves as it was with Quess Corp.
Marketing strategist Sandip Ghose, having experience with Fast Moving Customer Goods (FMCG), media sectors and cement, said that it will be a great opportunity for the company to build up brand-equity across the country.
“Mr Bangur (Hari Mohan Bangur) is a very astute businessman. Football is all set to grow in the country with ISL and television support. He would see this as a long-term investment – in which he can build the franchise of East Bengal in tandem with Shree Cement,” was quoted as saying by Moneycontrol.
“Being Kolkata-based, Shree Cement officials obviously understand the sentiments associated with the club. Mr Bangur speaks very fluent Bengali and deeply attached to the city, so he will nurture both the club and the brand – like a son of the soil – not merely an investor,” he further added.
East Bengal Secretary Debabrata Sarkar said that they will further apply to play in the ISL this year.
“After getting the investor, we will appeal to play in the ISL. We will adhere to their system. We (East Bengal) sat down with them last evening but all the issues were not solved, Mamata Banerjee was present and she herself helped iron out the details,” he said.
Mohun Bagan football club has already announced its association with Atletico de Kolkata and they will be playing in this year’s ISL which will be held in Goa.
