EC Hits Back At Mamata For Trying To “Belittle” It With Innuendos

New Delhi: The Election Commission, hitting back at West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee for suggesting that it hear the grievances of all political parties and not be guided by any particular dispensation, recounted its four meetings with Trinamool Congress delegations in Delhi and Kolkata since December 17, 2020, and termed her suggestion as “an attempt to belittle the institution of the commission with repeated innuendos and averments”.

The poll panel also rejected her demand for cancellation of orders for removal of director security Vivek Sahay and others, issued after lapses were pointed out by the state chief secretary and EC special observers in her personal security and police bandobast, which led to her being injured at Nandigram.

“Commission maintains the position that they would not like to keep on being put in the dock for alleged proximity to any political entity, etc. However, if Hon’ble CM persists in creating and attempting to perpetuate this myth for reasons best known to her, it is singularly unfortunate, and it is only for Hon’ble CM to adjudge as to why she is doing so,” the EC said in its response to Banerjee’s letter dated March 14.
