Islamabad: It was bound to happen – some major powers had earlier, anticipated an attack at the behest of ISIS-K on the Kabul airport. And as per reports, at least two explosions caused by two ISIS suicide bombers, have erupted outside the airport of the Afghan capital on Thursday. More than 60 people have been killed and close to 120 injured so far.
The US Central Command has confirmed that 12 US Service members are among the casualties with 15 severely injured.
“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport. Casualties are unclear at this time. We will provide additional details when we can,” said Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby as quoted by Dawn.com.
Meanwhile, Taliban have condoled the death of civilians due to the blast that accirdong to them took place in an area manned by US security forces.
In fact, US and allied officials warned of suicide bombers planning to launch an assault on the airport. Dawn further reported, “US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the explosion, according to a White House official. Biden was in a meeting with security officials about the situation in Afghanistan, where the United States is in the final steps of ending its 20-year war, when the explosion was first reported, according to a person familiar with the matter.”
The explosion shouldn’t take us by shock as the ISIS has an axe to grind against the Taliban who have seized control of almost the whole of Afghanistan. It remains to be seen how they (Taliban) retaliate.
