Ahmedabad: Riding on youngsters’ superb batting show, India levelled the T20I series 2-2 beating England by 8 runs in the fourth match at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Thursday.
In pursuit of 186, England reached 177 for eight at the end of 20 overs. Ben Stokes with 46 off 23 and Jason Roy’s 40 from 27 almost sealed the series for the visitors, but others failed to contribute to the cause.
Earlier, debutant Suryakumar Yadav’s 31-ball 57 and Shreyas Iyer’s 37 from 18 balls powered India to their highest total of the ongoing T20I series against England. India posted 185/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
The hosts lost openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma early in the day. The opening pair put on 21 before Rohit Sharma was caught and bowled off a slower ball. Rahul, fighting to retain his place in the Indian team following a couple of ducks, stayed on as Yadav went berserk but couldn’t make much of an impression. He managed only 14 in 17 balls.
Yadav, who got off the mark in international cricket with a six over fine leg, hit three over the fences and smashed six fours. He followed his Mumbai Indians teammate Ishan Kishan to score a half-century on debut. Kishan achieved the feat in the second T20 International held on March 14.
Fast bowlers Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with four wickets against his name. England kept the line-up unchanged from the third T20I. The fifth T20I will be played on Saturday, March 20.
Brief scores: India 185/8 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 57, Shreyas Iyer 37; Jofra Archer 4/33) beat England 177/8 in 20 overs (Ben Stokes 46, Jason Roy 40; Shardul Thakur 3/42) by 8 runs.
