Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may be trying hard to pacify us after the Indian men’s hockey side’s defeat to Belgium in Tokyo, but it’s back to Square One as the coveted gold still remains elusive.
After PV Sindhu’s bronze, it seems to be another long wait for a medal as hopes came crushing when the men failed to live up to the expectations. The brief phase of India’s so-called glorious run seems to be on the verge of an end.
In the highly anticipated women’s discus throw event India’s Kamalpreet Kaur finished 6th. Though she already scripted history by qualifying for the finals she failed to bring a medal back home. The much-awaited India’s wrestling campaign started with a loss as Sonam Malik lost to Mongolian Bolortuya Khurelkhyuu in the woman’s freestyle 62kg 1/8 final.
Even after these failures, India expected a lot more from the men’s hockey team after their historic win against GBR in the Quarterfinals. Reaching the semis after 41 years was a big achievement but winning the gold would be just icing on the cake but it didn’t happen after the meek surrender to the Belgians.
But all is not lost yet as India has still a chance of winning the bronze and for sure we are anxiously waiting.
Albeit Indian women’s hockey team should be ready for a tougher battle here’s hoping they would gun for gold and not marvel at bagging a bronze.
