New Delhi: Indian Cricketer Harbhajan Singh on Friday announced that he has decided to opt out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 due to ‘personal reasons’.
Harbhajan is the second player from the Chennai Super King’s team to withdraw from this season’s IPL after Suresh Raina.
Suresh Raina denied travelling to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the thirteenth edition of IPL amidst the pandemic. Previously, Harbhajan also delayed his journey with the team. His team arrived in UAE on August 21 along with CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
“I have informed the CSK management about my decision to pull out of this year’s IPL. I have decided to take a break due to personal reasons in these difficult times. I expect that everyone would respect my need for privacy,” Harbhajan told PTI on Friday.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan stated, “Harbhajan Singh informed us he won’t be available due to personal reasons. Team Chennai Super Kings is supportive of his decision and stands by him and his family during these testing times.”
Harbhajan also didn’t attend the training camp which was conducted in Chennai between August 15 and 20. However, the other team members MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and other Indian players attended the camp. Ravindra Jadeja also joined the batch later before the team left for UAE for IPL.
Earlier, two CSK players Deepak Chahar and Ruturaj Gaikwad tested positive for Covid-19 due to which the team had to delay it’s training in Dubai and Abu Dhabi while other teams started their net practice.
According to the rules of IPL, once a player has given a letter to the authorities stating that he will not be playing in the tournament, then he will not be allowed to return to the competition again, particularly during the pandemic period.
The IPL is yet to announce the schedule of the tournament which will start from September 19. It is expected that the match will be played between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
