Kolkata: Social media giant Facebook said that it had blocked temporarily a hashtag asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resign “by mistake” and there were no government orders on the matter.
The development is amid reports that social media companies around the world are being asked to delete posts that criticise the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic in India.
“We temporarily blocked this hashtag by mistake, not because the Indian government asked us to, and have since restored it,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying via a statement by The Telegraph.
If reports are anything to go by, a hashtag calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was blocked for a short span on Facebook on Wednesday. Users looking for the hashtag were shot a message that said such posts were “temporarily hidden here” because “some content in those posts goes against our Community Standards”.
India witnessed the highest spike as 3,645 people died of coronavirus in 24 hours amid reports of 3,79,257 new cases on Thursday.
