Haven’t had a chat with Karthik after Hyderabad loss: Kallis

Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Jacques Kallis on Tuesday said that he hadn’t had any discussion with skipper Dinesh Karthik and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan following his side’s loss at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday.

The Knight Riders have decided to rest a few of their players and give the others time to regroup before their clash against Rajasthan Royals at home on Thursday. While the likes of Karthik headed to Mumbai, Andre Russell and some others went back to Kolkata.

KKR’s campaign has visibly fallen off the radar with a string of losses–five to be exact.

When asked about what message did Khan give to the team, Kallis said, “I haven’t chatted to him since the guys have been in Mumbai. In fact, I think DK went home for a day as well. So we will catch up tomorrow and have a debrief and plan away going forward again for the next game.

He added, “We all want to perform a little bit better. Yeah, I think everyone’s in that space where we just want to get up and play better cricket and get back on winning ways. Losing certainly isn’t fun.”

The talismanic Andre Russell has been winning games on his own for Kolkata this season and the West Indian was too pleased with his batting position, especially against Royal Challengers Bangalore–the match in which Kolkata fell short by just 10 runs.

Coach Kallis too agreed that it is an area that needed to be thought of.

“Rinku (Singh) went in, in the 8th over and certainly haven’t sent Andre in that early. They got a partnership (51 runs with Chris Lynn) going.

“In hindsight, maybe we could have sent him a bit earlier. But it certainly hadn’t been one of our plans. But if a situation arises then it’s something that we will think of,”  he said.

On Karthik, Kallis said, “Hopefully he can get in and get us some big runs. That will certainly mean a lot to the team and as much as he wants to do it.”

“In the last game he came up in the order and unfortunately got run out. It’s about matching up players and situations. He’s a vital player for us and a world class player,” he added.

He also said that there had been no talks to remove the Tamil Nadu gloveman from the captaincy.

“No, we haven’t discussed it, nor has it been brought up,” he said.
