Washington DC: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Saturday clarified that his country would continue to speak to the Taliban on various issues of grave importance.

“We continue to maintain channels of communication with the Taliban on issues such as its commitment to let people leave Afghanistan should they choose to do so,” Blinken said.

“We are working closely with our partners in Qatar and Turkey to help get the airport in Kabul up and running as quickly as possible,” Blinken added as quoted by ANI.

Blinken elaborated that there would be no compromise on helping Afghans who are reeling under uncertainties. “Helping Afghans is more than a priority for us…It’s an ongoing commitment…UNSC resolution makes clear the international community’s expectations of the Taliban, including freedom of travel, upholding basic rights of Afghans, women and children,” Blinken said adding, “Our new team in Doha, Qatar is running, we are in constant contact with Americans who remain in Afghanistan, and wish to leave…we’ve assigned management team for the same,” Blinken said.

Meanwhile Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh V Shringla met Blinken and other senior US officials to discuss the ongoing situation in Afghanistan. “We had the opportunity to meet Secretary Blinken. He gave a lot of his time and spoke on issues ranging from Afghanistan to Quad Summit and also on cooperation in international organisations between our two countries,” he told the media.

On India’s recognition to the Taliban regime, Shringla added, “We said we’ve a wait and watch policy. It doesn’t mean you don’t do anything, it means that situation is very fluid on ground, you’ve to allow it to see how it evolves. You’ve to see whether assurances that have been made publicly are actually maintained on the ground.”
