Nottingham: Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar celebrated javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in a unique way — with jalebis and a jig on Bollywood number, “Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle, Ugle Heeray Moti” during his commentary on the first Test being played between India and England at the Trent Bridge here on Saturday.

Former South Africa all-rounder Shaun Pollock and media personality Harsha Bhogle, his co-commentators, also joined in the celebrations.

Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle, Ugle Heeray Moti” is from the 1966 film, Upkaar starring Manoj Kumar.

“It is really a big thing, an Olympic gold medal,” Pollock was quoted as saying by news agency IANS.

Another former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar also called the effort big. “The gold has come in athletics which makes it very big,” he said.
