Chennai: The Madras High Court on Thursday, that the “Bhaarathabhoomi (India) a holy land, has become a land of rapists, where rape is happening every 15 minutes”.
The remark came after when the court was hearing a case put forward by advocate A.P. Surya Prakasam pointing to the rape of an Assamese migrant worker in Tiruppur district.
“I had pleaded with the court to provide shelter and care for the affected woman and also to direct the Director General of Police to set up a special investigation team headed by Inspector General, Coimbatore. I had also prayed to the court to direct the government to provide her with financial assistance under the victims’ compensation scheme,” the senior advocate told IANS.
Prakasam had filed the affidavit seeking justice, shelter and care for a 22-year old migrant labourer from Assam, who was gang-raped by five men in Palladam, Tiruppur district of Tamil Nadu.
“The Honourable Court may further direct the Director-General of Police Tamil Nadu to constitute a special investigation team under the direct supervision of IG, Coimbatore, and direct the government to provide her monetary assistance under the victim’s compensation scheme” the affidavit read.
A bench of Justices N Kirubakaran and P Velmurugan ordered the relevant authorities to provide free treatment, food, shelter, and medical facilities for the victim and stated that she will be compensated as per the Victim Compensation Act.
