India Hands Over PLA Soldier Who Strayed Across LAC In Ladakh

New Delhi: A People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldier, identified as Corporal Wang Ya Long, got hold by the Indian army for straying across the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, handed back to China at the Chushul Moldo meeting point on Tuesday, said officials.

The soldier was caught in Demchok sector of eastern Ladakh amidst the ongoing border standoff where both sides deployed over 50,000 troops each with advanced weapons and systems.

In a statement, the Indian army had said that it received a request from the PLA about the whereabouts of the missing soldier.

“As per established protocols, he will be returned to Chinese officials at the Chushul-Moldo meeting point after completion of formalities”, said the army statement.

The PLA issued a statement on Monday night saying their soldier went missing while searching foer a yak on the evening of October 18.

“After the incident, Chinese border guards took the initiative to report the situation to the Indian side as soon as possible, and hoped that the Indian side would assist in search and rescue”, spokesperson of the Western Theatre Command, Colonel Zhang Shuili, added.

As the Ladakh theatre continues to be tensed, during the 7th round of military commanders’ talks on October 12 to defuse tension along LAC, the Indian side demanded disengagement at all risk point and restoration of status quo ante of early April.

The two sides agreed to continue with their meeting to settle at a mutually acceptable solution for disengagement in the eastern Ladakh.

India and China are expected to hold the eighth round of military talks this week.
