London: The Head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has called the recent surge in COVID-19 in India “beyond heartbreaking”. He said that the UN agency has dispatched critical supplies, thousands of portable Oxygen machines that help patients breathe in the subcontinent.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom said at a press briefing on Monday, the pandemic “continues to intensify” globally and that coronavirus infections have now risen for the ninth straight week, while fatalities have increased for the sixth week in a row.

“There were as many cases globally last week as in the first five months of the pandemic,” he said.

Tedros also addressed the crisis in India and said WHO has redeployed more than 2,000 staff to support the country’s response on the ground and is helping authorities, including vaccination.

Further, he said that WHO also supplies pre-made mobile field hospitals and lab in India.
