Kolkata: The Government of West Bengal has transferred several IPS officers with promotion.  Among them are the two IPS officers, who were called by the Centre on central deputation two weeks ago over the recent attack on BJP national president JP Nadda’s convoy near Diamond Harbour area in the state.

As of now, 20 IPS officers were transferred, and 13 others were promoted.

Rajeev Kumar, who was the Inspector-General of Police, has been promoted as the Additional Director General of Police and Bholanath Pandey, who was the Diamond Harbour Superintendent of Police, has been transferred to a less significant post as the SP, Home Guard. However, the position of another IPS officer Praveen Kumar Tripathi, DIG, remained the same.

They were in charge of Nadda’s security when his convoy was attacked in South Pargana district on December 10. These three IPS officers were caught between the Centre-state crossfires following the attack on Nadda’s convoy and are solely responsible for managing security for the event by the MHA and subsequently placed on central deputation.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested on the decision by the Centre and had refused to release the officers.

Describing it a “blatant misuse” of the emergency provision of IPS Cadre Rule 1954, Banerjee tweeted, “This act is nothing but a deliberate attempt to encroach upon State’s jurisdiction & demoralize the serving officers in WB. This move, particularly before the election is against the basic tenets of the federal structure. It’s unconstitutional & completely unacceptable! We wouldn’t allow this brazen attempt by the Centre to control the State machinery by proxy! West Bengal is not going to cow-down in front of expansionist & undemocratic forces.”

In the meantime, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar again criticised the state government saying that the situation in Wes Bengal is “alarming.”

Questioning the role of state security advisor Surajit Kar Purakayastha, Dhankhar tweeted, “Alarming reports that De facto boss @WBPolice Surajit Kar Purakayastha #SSA @MamataOfficial vigorously engaged in translating politically motivated police actions. Concerned at Field police work of DGP- postings & transfer, investigation usurped by De facto boss Purakayastha.”
