Bambolim: ATK Mohun Bagan kick started their Indian Super League campaign this term with a 1-0 win over Kerala Blasters at the GMC Stadium in Bambolim on Saturday.

Roy Krishna, ATKMB’s hitman from Fiji scored the only goal of the match in the 67th minute to hand his side the perfect start to the competition.
Both teams started the competition on a nervy note and it was ATKMB, who could have scored early on had Krishna not missed after capitalising on a corner kick. Antonio Habas’ side was dealt with a huge blow when Michael Soosairaj went down with an injury which eventually saw him being stretchered out of the stadium.

Kerala Blasters defender Costa Nhamoinesu rescued his side from conceding when he blocked Krishna’s shot from close range. Krishna once again found an opportunity to put his side ahead in the 34th minute but his shot was way above the crossbar. Kerala couldn’t threaten much with their attack but their dominated the midfield. Yet they came close to scoring in the second half through Sahal Abdul, who failed to keep his strike on target.

But Krishna ensured that the Mariners took the lead in the 67th minute when Manvir Singh swung in a cross from the right wing. And the Fijian striker made no mistake in netting the ball.

Kerala turned up the tempo in the dying stages of the game in an effort to equalise but the sturdy defense of ATK Mohun Bagan ensured that they walked home with all three points in their first ever ISL match.

ATKMB’s next challenge is against SC East Bengal on 27 November in the famous Kolkata derby.
