Kolkata: Veteran leader Jay Prakash Majumdar, who was suspended from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in January, joined the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Tuesday, March 8.
TMC formally inducted Majumdar during a meeting at Nazrul Mancha auditorium here. Just after his joining, Majumdar was made the TMC vice-president.
The development came a day after BJP Parliamentarian Locket Chatterjee met suspended BJP leaders Jay Prakash Majumdar and Ritesh Tiwari along with other leaders like Sayantan Basu and Raju Banerjee who are also known to be unhappy with the party leadership in West Bengal.
Till recently, Majumdar was serving as the West Bengal BJP spokesperson. After quitting Congress, Majumdar had joined the saffron party in 2014. BJP suspended him in January 2022 for violating the party lines.
“During the Bengal poll, I was given the task of communicating the pulse of the state to the central leadership. However, some central leaders were trying to put down the Bengal brigade of the party. I told them it was not right,” Majumdar was quoted as saying in the media.
“Everyone knows what happened right after the election results were declared. After 12 PM on May 2 [2021], Delhi leaders were desperately looking for returned tickets to Delhi. Meanwhile, many BJP workers were being attacked across Bengal and no prominent leader was there to stand beside them,” Majumdar had further claimed.
