Joe Biden To Take Oath As US President Today; Donald Trump To Skip Ceremony

Washington: Over two months after defeating Republican Donald Trump in a closely-contested presidential election, Democrat Joe Biden will take oath as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday.
Biden, who served as the vice president under Barack Obama administration, will be the oldest person ever to be sworn in as the president of the country. Kamala Harris, who became the first woman and first Black and Indian American to be elected as vice president, will also take oath today.
The inauguration ceremony which comes days after the recent attack on US Capitol hill, will be a low-key affair amid reports of possible violence by pro-Trump supporters to disrupt the event.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in and around Capitol Hill, a large part of Pennsylvania Avenue and the White House, to ensure a peaceful transition of power. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in its internal bulletins has warned of the potential for violence in Washington DC and at all 50 state Capitols.
Earlier this month, unprecedented scenes were witnessed at the US Capitol when pro-Trump supporters stormed the building, seeking to prevent lawmakers from certifying the victory of Biden and Harris in the November 3 elections.
Five people, including a woman and a police officer died in the protest that turned violent later.
Following the mayhem, Trump announced that he will not be attending Biden’s presidential inauguration. The outgoing President also appealed for “healing and reconciliation” and pledged a smooth transition of power to Biden.
Biden called the outgoing President’s decision a “good thing and said that it is “one of the few things he and Trump have ever agreed on”.
