Thiruvananthapuram: A 17-year-old Dalit girl allegedly sets self on fire after being sexually assaulted by an auto driver in Kerala.
According to police, Manu Manoj, also a member of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), had allegedly assaulted the minor on multiple occasions after promising her that he would marry her. After the incident came into light, the DYFI expelled Manoj from the committee, as per reports by Bangalore Mirror.
On October 25, she doused herself with kerosene and set self ablaze. She was later admitted in the Kottayam Medical College having 60 per cent burns. Then she was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram medical college hospital, where she took her last breath on Saturday.
As per reports by Hindustan Times, the parents of the deceased teenager have filed a complaint against the alleged. It is said that the accused had threatened them and pressurised them to withdraw the complaint.
Police have registered a case against him under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences. Also, charges under the DC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been invoked against the alleged.
