Kolkata: A 19-year-old Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) aspirant cycled from Gosaba in Sundarbans to Kolkata for over six-hours, estimated to be 75 km, on Wednesday along with his father to appear for the examination.
Diganta Mondal and his father Rabi Mondal, who is a carpenter, started their journey from their home in Gosaba on their individual cycles around 6 pm on Tuesday. They crossed the Bidyadhari river on a boat and then cycled for four hours after which they reached Piyali village in South 24 Paraganas and halted at their relative’s place.
The next day, they again started their journey, but this time only on one bicycle. His father Rabi was pedalling the cycle and Diganta was revising his lessons at the back.
At around 9 am, they reached Sonarpur and parked their cycle, took an auto to Garia and again changed two more buses to reach the examination centre around 11 am at Salt Lake Sector V, before the scheduled timing of 3 pm to start the exam.
Diganta who secured 85% marks in his Higher Secondary Examination last year and has been preparing for over one year to appear in the JEE exams said, “Had trains been running, the journey wouldn’t have been so taxing. But I was determined to sit for the exam for which I have been preparing for the past two years. I couldn’t miss it at any cost,” was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Rabi said it didn’t matter how difficult was the journey for them. But he was constantly fearing that he may get infected by the virus. “My son’s grit kept me going and the 75-km journey on a cycle on a battered road didn’t matter. But the fear of contracting the infection was always there at the back of my mind,” the father said.
There are numerous JEE aspirants across the state who travelled from a distant place to appear for the examination amidst the pandemic.
Another candidate Subhankar Burman along with his father from Balurghat took a bus to reach Kolkata on August 30. They sojourned at their relative’s place for three nights to appear in the exams. Subhankar said that they had fear of contracting the virus all the time, but he had no other option.
There are still many students who couldn’t appear for the entrance examination as they are worried that they would contract the virus. The attendance during the second day of the JEE exams saw the rise up to 70% as it was previously 30% on the first day.
