Kolkata: The city witnessed the winter chill on Monday morning as the mercury dropped to 15.5 degree Celsius all of a sudden.
The temperature has been steadfastly decreasing over the past 48 hours. Compared to Saturday, the minimum temperature has come down to around 19.5 degree Celsius on Sunday.
“The minimum has dropped to 15.5 degree Celsius which is three degrees below the normal. It has dropped by around four degrees since Sunday morning,” a senior official of the Indian Meteorological Department’s Office in Kolkata was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
The icy winds from Western Himalayas struck the plains causing tremendous mercury drop in most parts of North-Western India.
Meanwhile, depression over South-West Bay of Bengal close to Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast is likely to escalate resulting in a cyclone.
“The system is sucking winds from all directions as a result of which cold and dry northerly winds are passing through Kolkata and other districts,” said the official.
