Kolkata: Former India and East Bengal (now SC East Bengal) skipper Surajit Sengupta passed away after he succumbed to Covid-19 at a city hospital here on Thursday.
Sengupta was admitted to a private hospital here after he tested positive for Covid-19 on January 23 and slipped into ventilation last week. Despite showing signs of recovery, he couldn’t be revived.
The iconic winger turned out for all the three Kolkata giants, starting with Mohun Bagan (1973) and eventually leading East Bengal, after stints with the Mohammedan Sporting Club.
Sengupta was also part of the Indian team that won bronze in the Asian Games in 1970. It is the second heartbreak for the country’s football lovers in as many months after another star former footballer and coach Subhas Bhowmick died last month.
