Kolkata: Legendary Bengali singer Sandhya Mukherjee, 90, passed away after a prolonged illness here on Tuesday, February 15.
Sandhya Mukherjee has been unwell for the past few weeks. According to hospital sources, the veteran singer suffered a massive cardiac arrest on Tuesday. Despite extensive efforts to revive her, she breathed her last at 7.30pm.
Sandhya Mukherjee was hospitalised in January last week due to complications after she tested Covid-19 positive.
Recently, the legendary singer was in the news after she turned down the Padma Shri conferred by the Centre. Her daughter Soumi Sengupta said that her mother declined the honour because “To confer a Padma Shri to a legend like her at the age of 90 is extremely demeaning”.
“There is no politics in it. She is far beyond any politics. Please don’t try to find out any political reasons for it. She felt insulted, that’s all,” Soumi Sengupta was quoted as saying by the agencies.
